The TESOL acronym: TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) refers to teaching English ‘in use’ (as opposed to English literature) in both non-English speaking and English speaking countries to NESB (Non English Speaking Background) students. Traditionally TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) has referred to the teaching of English to students in non-English speaking countries. Similarly TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) has traditionally referred to the teaching of English to students (such as migrants) in English speaking countries. Naturally students often speak more than one language, so TESL has in many places been replaced by the acronym TESOL. TESOL also encompasses teaching English to students in non-English speaking countries. In short, TESOL is a broad term that encompasses both TEFL and TESL.
