ARGENTINA
Australia has certainly proven they can play soccer, and play it very
well (yes, we all know it WASN'T a penalty!). But if you want to witness
soccer fever (or football, I should say) at its maximum, Argentina is
the place to be! With the world cup in full swing, locals and foreigners
alike are being swept up in the passion that is 'fútbol'.
Of course there is much more to this large South American country than just
the futbol. It is extremely diverse geographically: the Andes run along its
western border, it has a massive coastline to the east, it shares the magnificent
Iguazu Falls with Brasil and Paraguay, and it is home to the best beef in the
world!
Argentina has all climates (except tropical; there is sub-tropical in
the north) and one of the most bustling capital cities in the world: Buenos
Aires, home of tango!
Foreigners will find Buenos Aires easy to navigate, friendly (for a large city!), and incredibly fun! Nightlife is crazy, with people of all ages staying out into the wee hours of the morning. On weekends, it is common to not even have dinner before 10 or 11pm, and leave the house at midnight at the earliest; club-goers won't even hit the clubs until about 3am!
After the severe economic collapse of late 2001, Argentina has re-built its
economy remarkably well. TESOL teachers enjoy a stable market (in a country
where unemployment is a big problem) with lots of work in language schools,
public schools and many opportunities for teaching in-company business English.
A TESOL certificate is all you need - a university degree is not a requirement.
You won't get rich working in Argentina, but cost of living is quite low and
you will earn enough to live on, and sometimes even travel. You will definitely
have enough to go see the fútbol every Sunday! It all comes back to the fútbol...
Not convinced? Let the photos speak for themselves!
And let's not forget what a great effort Argentina made recently to get all the way through to the quarter finals of the World Cup!!
Comprehensive country guides are available for all Teach International students and graduates. These guides include helpful information on the ESOL market, visa requirements, cost of living, salaries, and numerous web links referring you to more helpful advice on accommodation, employment and media in the country where you are headed.
