JAPAN

Tokyo at nightWhat is it that draws you to Japan? Is it the traditional culture – the beautiful aesthetic architecture of temples and old homes, embroidered kimonos, rural festivals, taiko drums, gardens designed centuries ago, beautiful art forms like calligraphy and shuji painting…?

Or is it the modern face of this fascinating country – the tacky love hotels, the comic book obsession, karaoke rooms, the fashion districts, bustling neon streets and the pop music scene? Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll likely find it in Japan. The Japanese, often referred to as the world’s most polite people, will amaze you with their humour, generosity and kindness.

Japanese temple Don’t make the mistake of assuming Japan is all urban and concrete. Eighty percent of the country is mountains, and therefore rural. If you need a break from the city, it’s easy to get into the countryside for a good hike, ski, or perhaps just a soak in some beautiful hot springs.

The ESOL industry is strong in Japan, and there are many jobs for teachers with TESOL and a university degree, or those under 30 who would like to go on a working holiday visa. Opportunities lie in language schools, including the larger chains like NOVA, GEOS and AEON, as well as in countless smaller language schools. Perhaps you’d like to teach in-company classes in businesses, or get into the school system and teach primary or secondary classes.
